Welcome to A Primitive Place!

"Where Prim Friends Gather"

Step into a world where history, heart, and home come together. A Primitive Place Magazine is a 100-page quarterly publication dedicated to celebrating the warmth and simplicity of primitive, colonial, country, and early American decorating. Since 2010, we’ve opened the doors to hundreds of homes across the country—each one uniquely styled by its homeowner and never staged. From 1700s saltboxes to modern homes with early influence, every issue showcases how antiques can be beautifully and authentically incorporated into any space, regardless of age or architecture.

Carefully curated and thoughtfully written, each issue offers more than inspiration—it offers education. You'll find in-depth articles about early antiques, their history, and how to seamlessly blend them into your own home. We also include DIY craft projects, quick and easy recipes, artisan features, antiques sold at auction, and a deep appreciation for craftsmanship and tradition. Every page is brought to life through rich storytelling and high-quality photography, printed on premium stock paper designed to be kept, collected, and revisited for years to come.

We’re also proud to publish special editions throughout the year, offering even more content focused on specific themes like Civil War relics, Americana decor, gardening, and a primitive Christmas. While digital copies are available, we remain proudly committed to print. There’s nothing quite like holding a magazine in your hands and being transported to a simpler time—one where items were built to last and every object told a story. Discover why readers call A Primitive Place the best primitive, colonial, and country magazine on the market—with each issue only getting better than the last!

The Summer 2025 Issue will be released on May 15th!

On the cover of our Summer 2025 issue is the Henry Whitfield House, located in Guilford, Connecticut. This house, built almost four centuries ago in 1639, predates the actual settlement of the town and holds the distinction of being the oldest house in Connecticut and the oldest stone house in all of New England. Inside this issue, you’ll also tour five warm and welcoming homes, each offering its own unique take on the primitive, country, and colonial decorating styles:

• David and Robin Lewis – Chillicothe, Ohio: An Ohio farmhouse steeped in primitive tradition, complete with an authentic tavern room, colonial portraits, a miniature version of a cage bar, and the viral wooden bowl sink cover.

• Bill and Joan Kennedy – Norfolk, Massachusetts: A home that beautifully blends airy, light-filled spaces with the welcoming warmth of primitive wood tones.

• BJ McElroy – Bloomington, Indiana: A joyful mix of country, primitive, and colonial styles—BJ decorates with what she loves, bringing vibrant pops of color and personality into every room.

• Ira and Becky May – Newton, Illinois: A frugal farmer’s wife with a creative spirit, Becky has mastered the art of decorating on a budget—filling her home with handmade treasures and primitive touches that feel both personal and timeless.

• Dennis and Peggy Flavin – Gloucester, Massachusetts: Nestled at the head of Lobster Cove, their 1760 Cape Ann cottage is one of the oldest surviving Cape Ann homes, showcasing stunning historic architecture and coastal charm.

You’ll also find fascinating articles on the craft of hooked rugs, the collectible beauty of jadeite, types of basket repairs, and a visit to the oldest stone house in New England! Plus, enjoy seasonal recipes, DIY crafts, an artisan spotlight, and more—all created to inspire your primitive heart and home.
